PORTRAIT SESSION FAQS

What is a look?

A look is a setup consisting of a combination of wardrobe, makeup, hair styling, location, background, and/or lighting.

Once a setup is ready, we’ll shoot your first “look” then change the setup (if desired) to shoot your second look. This may be changing your wardrobe, switching the background/location, going for a completely different makeup look, etc. Sometimes you may like the setup from the first look, so the second look will perhaps just be changing the wardrobe or styling.

Additionally, if you wish to shoot both indoors and outdoors, that would be considered 2 different looks. Keep this in mind when determining how to split up your session.

Do you do headshots?

I do! But not here. If you’d like headshots, check out my headshot website, www.jwheadshots.com. There you can see my headshot portfolio, get rates and info, and book a shoot right through the website!

Do you accept walk-ins?

No. All sessions are by appointment only.

Do you photograph children?

No. I only photograph subjects 18 years or older.

Will I receive all the photos from the session?

You'll be able to download make all your photos via your private gallery (and Dropbox for larger projects). They’ll be available for download up to 30 days, so you’ll want to download them quickly.

How will I receive the photos?

Previews as well as final retouched photographs will be delivered via an online gallery. Here you’ll be able to select your favorites as well as download all your images. Your gallery will remain active for up to 30 days.

Do you shoot in a studio or outdoors?

I do both. While I’m primarily work in the studio, we’re also able to do your session outdoors as well (weather permitting).

Do you offer consultations before booking you?

I do! Consultations are available when purchased as an add-on for $250 or as part of the Elite session.

What’s a consultation like?

Consultations last 1-hour during which we’ll discuss the type of images you’re trying to achieve. Once that’s determined we’ll discuss wardrobe options, background and lighting options, as well as makeup/hair considerations. All the information gathered during this process is essential for getting the absolute best from your shoot.

How far in advance should I book you?

Since portrait sessions often require lots of planning, I recommend booking me at least 10-14 days before your desired session date. This will give all of us plenty of time to prep for your shoot and ensure we get the best results! Additionally, the closer you schedule your session from the time of booking, the easier it will be to keep your appointment thus avoiding any rescheduling fees.

Is hair and makeup included?

Makeup and hairstyling is separate and paid directly to the makeup artist. The makeup artist is highly recommended especially if you wish to shoot any beauty looks. She accepts cash and payments via Venmo.

Can I use my own makeup artist?

If you’re in need of makeup, I do require you to use one of my makeup artists. My makeup artists understand in great detail how I work and how to apply makeup that will not only make you look great, but will also photograph well with the lighting and techniques I use. In the past, clients have used their own makeup artists with less than stellar results. Trust me, use one of my makeup artists and you won’t be disappointed!

Is retouching included?

Each package includes a number of retouched photographs. However, if you’d like to order additional retouching, the fee is only $50 per image. Retouching includes removing any imperfections, evening out your skin, color correction, softening wrinkles/smile lines, and cleaning up flyaway hairs making sure you look your absolute best.

What should I wear?

It’s generally best to keep your wardrobe simple. Avoid tops with bold patterns, prints, frilly necklines and shoulders, or anything that makes you look bulky. Layered clothing is okay. Just make sure your clothing compliments the look your going for. If shooting beauty, for example, a simple tube top is perfect to reveal your shoulders and neckline. I’ll be sending your wardrobe tips upon booking as well as give you feedback during the consultation process so you’ll be properly prepared.

Can I bring a guest?

Sure! If it will make you feel more comfortable and you won’t be distracted, you may bring a guest with you. Due to space restrictions please keep number of guests to no more than 2 additional people.

What is your policy for cancellations and/or rescheduling?

All deposits/session payments are non-refundable so cancellations will result in loss of payment.

We understand that unexpected things sometime happen and you may need to move your session to another date. Rescheduling must be done at least 3 days prior to your shoot date to avoid a forfeiture of payment. As a consolation, if you're unable to put in your request prior to the deadline, you may pay a $150 rescheduling fee (in addition to the aforementioned fees) to avoid losing your payment completely.
